Sarah Misenko, a Biochemistry PhD candidate, has recently been awarded a $5,000 Executive Women of New Jersey (EWNJ) scholarship. Since their inception, EWNJ's unique scholarship program has awarded over $1.2 million in scholarship assistance to non-traditional graduate school students attending New Jersey colleges and universities. EWNJ advocates for women's leadership in New Jersey and invests in the future of women’s professional careers.

BME PhD Graduate Student Kate O’Neill was accorded honorable mention status in the 2016 Ford Foundation Fellowship Programs competition administered by the Fellowships Office of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. The programs seek to increase the diversity of the nation’s college and university faculties by increasing their ethnic and racial diversity, to maximize the educational benefits of diversity, and to increase the number of professors who can and will use diversity as a resource for enriching the education of all students.

Antoinette Nelson was awarded a $10,0000 Pre-Doctoral Fellowship in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the American Foundation for Pharmaceutical Education. Antoinette’s thesis work focuses on the development of a nano-based mucosal pre-exposure prophylaxis technique for HIV. Congratulations to Antoinette and her Advisor Professor Patrick Sinko

A patent was issued to Eric Novik, Martin Yarmush and colleagues entitled, "Compositions and Methods of Functionally Enhanced In Vitro Culture System” (Patent number 9243221). The invention describes the development of a hepatocyte co-culture system in which the cells are highly metabolically active from the onset of culture, thereby allowing for immediate drug testing. This in vitro culture system is currently marketed by Hurel Corporation, where Eric Novik serves as the Chief Technical Officer.Dr. Eric Novik graduated from the Biotech Program with a PhD in 2007 under Professor Yarmush`s supervision.

BME PhD Student Dan Myers received a fellowship from the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) to carry his proposed project entitled "Orally Deliverable Peptide-Conjugated Nanoparticles to Improve Anti-HIV Drug Concentrations in the Intestinal Mucosa".

Graduate Student, Agnes Yeboah, was renewed for a 1-year, Schlumberger Foundation "Faculty for the Future" Fellowship to complete her PhD studies on developing an enhanced nanoparticle-based wound healing therapy. This program, now in its eleventh year, supports women scientists from developing countries through grants to enable them to pursue PhDs and postdoctoral studies in scientific and engineering disciplines at leading universities worldwide. Agnes is advised by Professor Martin Yarmush.
