Biotech Program Receives Two NIH Grant Supplements to Develop New Courses

Two NIH grant supplements, each ~$85,000, were awarded to the Rutgers Biotech Program to develop new courses in “Professional Preparedness in Biotechnology” and “Interdisciplinary Research Training in Biostatistics: Enhancing Reproducibility”. The first course will be developed by Susan Engelhardt and Martin Yarmush, and the second course will be developed by Ramsey Foty and Martin Yarmush.

Sarah Misenko Awarded an Executive Women of New Jersey (EWNJ) Scholarship

Sarah Misenko, a Biochemistry PhD candidate, has recently been awarded a $5,000 Executive Women of New Jersey (EWNJ) scholarship. Since their inception, EWNJ's unique scholarship program has awarded over $1.2 million in scholarship assistance to non-traditional graduate school students attending New Jersey colleges and universities. EWNJ advocates for women's leadership in New Jersey and invests in the future of women’s professional careers.

Przemyslaw Swiatkoski Awarded the Pre-Doctoral Fellowship from the NJCBIR

Biotech Fellow Peter Swiatkowski was awarded a predoctoral fellowship from the New Jersey Commission on Brain Injury Research for up to 3 years, renewable each year. The research under this fellowship will investigate the effects of cypin and proteasome manipulation in vivo on neuronal morphology,electrophysiology, and behavior following traumatic brain injury in mice.

Kate O’Neill Receives Ford Fellowship Honorable Mention

BME PhD Graduate Student Kate O’Neill was accorded honorable mention status in the 2016 Ford Foundation Fellowship Programs competition administered by the Fellowships Office of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. The programs seek to increase the diversity of the nation’s college and university faculties by increasing their ethnic and racial diversity, to maximize the educational benefits of diversity, and to increase the number of professors who can and will use diversity as a resource for enriching the education of all students.

Biotech Fellow Wins SoE Outstanding Student Award

Andrea Gray was chosen as this year’s recipient of the Rutgers School of Engineering Outstanding Student Award. Andrea graduated in January 2016 after completing her thesis entitled, “Approaches for Improving the Therapeutic Potential of Mesenchymal Stromal Cells”, under the guidance of Professor Martin Yarmush. Andrea is currently a Staff Fellow in the Office of Cellular, Tissue and Gene Therapies within the Center for Biological Evaluation and Research at the US Food and Drug Administration.

Biotech Fellow Awarded AFPE Fellowship

Antoinette Nelson was awarded a $10,0000 Pre-Doctoral Fellowship in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the American Foundation for Pharmaceutical Education. Antoinette’s thesis work focuses on the development of a nano-based mucosal pre-exposure prophylaxis technique for HIV. Congratulations to Antoinette and her Advisor Professor Patrick Sinko

Przemyslaw Swiatkowski Awarded Spinal Cord Injury Training Travel Grant

On February 22nd Peter was awarded the Spinal Cord Injury Techniques Training Travel Grant (for the amount of $1,500) from the New Jersey Commission on Spinal Cord Research, and this award was used to cover tuition for the Workshop on Spinal Cord Injury Research Methods at W.M.Keck Center for Collaborative Neuroscience at Rutgers

Patent Issued to Biotech Fellow

A patent was issued to Eric Novik, Martin Yarmush and colleagues entitled, "Compositions and Methods of Functionally Enhanced In Vitro Culture System” (Patent number 9243221). The invention describes the development of a hepatocyte co-culture system in which the cells are highly metabolically active from the onset of culture, thereby allowing for immediate drug testing. This in vitro culture system is currently marketed by Hurel Corporation, where Eric Novik serves as the Chief Technical Officer.Dr. Eric Novik graduated from the Biotech Program with a PhD in 2007 under Professor Yarmush`s supervision.

Graduate Student, Thomas Linz was awarded a 2 year, $50,000 New Jersey Commission on Cancer Research Pre-Doctoral Fellowship for his project entitled "Targeted Alpha-Particle Therapy of Triple Negative Breast Cancer Using 'Sticky' Liposomes".

BME PhD Student Dan Myers received a fellowship from the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) to carry his proposed project entitled "Orally Deliverable Peptide-Conjugated Nanoparticles to Improve Anti-HIV Drug Concentrations in the Intestinal Mucosa".

Brittany Taylor receives National FASEB MARC Travel Award

BME PhD student, Brittany Taylor, received a travel award from The Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB) to attend the FASEB NIH Grant Writing Seminar and RCR Workshop held in Bethesda, MD. This is a nationally acclaimed seminar that teaches Ph.D. students, postdoctoral fellows and early-career scientists who aspire to  tenure track how to write a successful grant application. She also received a travel award from the FASEB/ Maximizing Access to Research Careers (MARC) program to attend the 2015 Biomedical Engineering Society Annual Meeting.

Seul-A Bae and Evelyn Okeke win NSF Graduate Research Fellowships

Two first-year Biotechnology Training Program fellows, Seul-A Bae and Evelyn Okeke were awarded prestigious NSF GRF fellowships, which provides tuition and a $30,000 stipend for three years. Seul-A is a graduate student in the Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Graduate Program working in Dr. Ioannis Androulakis' lab, and Evelyn is a graduate student in the Biochemistry and A Molecular Biology Graduate Program working in Dr. Kiran Madura's lab. Hearty congratulations to both students!

Agnes Yeboah Awarded Renewal for "Faculty for the Future" Fellowship

Graduate Student, Agnes Yeboah, was renewed for a 1-year, Schlumberger Foundation "Faculty for the Future" Fellowship to complete her PhD studies on developing an enhanced nanoparticle-based wound healing therapy. This program, now in its eleventh year, supports women scientists from developing countries through grants to enable them to pursue PhDs and postdoctoral studies in scientific and engineering disciplines at leading universities worldwide. Agnes is advised by Professor Martin Yarmush.

Kathryn Drzewiecki Wins P.E.O. Scholar Award

BME PhD student Kathryn Drzewiecki has recently been awarded a $15k P.E.O (Philanthropic Educational Organization) Scholar Award. The P.E.O. Sisterhood is interested in bringing increased opportunities for higher education to women. The P.E.O. Scholar Award was established in 1991 to provide substantial merit-based awards for women who are pursuing a doctoral level degree at an accredited college or university.
